Guest Speakers from Special Olympics & Inclusivity at RMS
Today, our students enjoyed a presentation from our school social worker, Mrs. KD, about our Unified Champions class. Students watched a video created by the RMS Unified student leadership team, showcasing the impact of inclusion. They also heard from two Special Olympics athletes. At the end of the presentation, students were given the opportunity to sign a pledge to be inclusive, demonstrate kindness, and act in a safe and responsible manner.
Special Olympics Minnesota athletes Erik and Abby joined us to share their experiences—both as athletes and in life. Erik, a golf and basketball athlete, spoke about the Unified program and how it has positively impacted his life. Abby, a six-sport athlete, highlighted the meaningful connections she formed through Special Olympics and encouraged students to build those connections now rather than waiting until later in life.
"When you are in the hallway, say hi to everyone, and ask your classmates how they are doing," said Abby. "Be kind. When you are kind, you can make your school a better place where everyone feels included. When everyone feels included, great things can happen. The world needs leaders like you to make our communities more inclusive for all people."
