MCA Testing Season is Coming Up

Each year, students in grades 3 through 12 take the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs). Assessments begin in April and go through the beginning of May.

What are the MCAs?

The MCAs are statewide assessments in three subjects: Reading, Math and Science. You can learn more about the MCAs by reviewing the attached PDF from the Minnesota Department of Education and you can view details regarding your school’s assessments on the District’s Testing and Assessment web page.

Test Subject Grades Administered
Reading 3-8, 10
Math 3-8, 11
Science 5, 8, High school students taking Biology/Life Science

How are the test results used?

Our mission is to collect meaningful information on student learning, communicate this in a user-friendly way and utilize the data to make strong instructional decisions that will best serve students. Results of the tests do not impact student grades and are used to inform instructional and curricular decisions at the school and at the district. The information that is obtained from these assessments helps teachers understand how students are doing in reading, mathematics and writing. Our District also uses the student achievement from the MCAs to provide instructional programming and to determine procedures or placement for students based on their demonstrated academic skills.

What can I do to help?

To help prepare your child for the MCAs, encourage them to:

  • Get a good night’s sleep and eat a full breakfast the day of the tests.
  • Try their best on each question and try not to rush.
  • Be respectful of other students who take longer to finish.
  • Use paper and pencil to show their work for math questions.

Thank you for your continued partnership in your child’s learning!
