Eagle Bluff
Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center: 6th-Grade Trip
Founded in 1978, Eagle Bluff is a private, non-profit residential environmental learning center providing accredited education programs and outdoor adventures in the scenic bluff country near Lanesboro, Minnesota. Attending the overnighting program at Eagle Bluff is a Richfield Spartan sixth grade tradition. Our sixth grade class has been attending an environmental learning center for many years.

- Family Involvement
Which student groups should be included in a team-building experience?
Participation: Traditionally, only sixth grade students participated in Eagle Bluff. However, due to the pandemic, it was canceled for the past two years. This means that next year's 7th and 8th grade students missed out on this opportunity.
As we plan for the 2022-23 school year, which student groups should be included in a team-building experience?
- All grades - 56.7%
- Sixth grade - 20.6%
- Seventh grade - 7.1%
- Eighth grade - 4.3%
- Other combination - 11.3% (6th & 7th, 7th & 8th, 6th & 8th)
What type of event do you prefer?
Frequency: A larger, overnight experience is costly and requires a lot of staff and volunteer time. For this reason, it can only take place once during the year. Same-day experiences that happen locally or on-site are more cost effective and could likely happen more than once during the year, reinforcing skills and deepening student relationships.
Which would you prefer?
- One large overnight experience - 50.7%
- Multiple single-day experiences during the year - 49.3%
What do you want students to get out of the experience?
Goals: As we think about these types of opportunities, what do you want students to get out of the experience?
What are the most important things for RMS students to do or learn from this type of experience?
Very Important | Somewhat Important | Not Very Important | Not Important | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Make New Friends | 64.3% | 30.8% | 4.2% | 0.7% |
Challenge Themselves | 77.6% | 20.3% | 2.1% | 0% |
Learn Teamwork | 84.4% | 15.6% | 0% | 0% |
Try SOmething New | 77.6% | 20.3% | 1.4% | 0.7% |
Spend the Night Away from home | 32.6% | 25.5% | 26.2% | 15.6% |
Family Involvement
Family Involvement: The success of these experiences relies heavily on family support. Please tell us how you can help! Large overnight events like Eagle Bluff cost around $250 per student ($72,000 per grade). We would need families to help fundraise, plan logistics, as well as chaperone.
How can your family help support RMS student team-building experiences?
Yes | Possibly | No | |
---|---|---|---|
Our family can help fundraise | 45.5% | 44.1% | 10.5% |
Our family can donate money | 44.8% | 34.3% | 21.0% |

Subject: Eagle Bluff & Other Team-building Opportunities for RMS Students
Hello RMS Staff and Families,
In the past few days, there has been a lot of conversation about the future of the Eagle Bluff trip at Richfield Middle School. We are writing to you today to share our goals and hopes for current and incoming Richfield Middle School students.
For those of you who don’t know, Eagle Bluff is an environmental learning center that provides accredited education programs and outdoor adventures. Traditionally, our incoming sixth grade class attends this overnight trip each year as a way to get to know their new classmates, build friendships and participate in team-building activities. For the past two years, the trip has been canceled due to the pandemic.
We firmly believe that middle school students benefit from this type of experiential learning and that team-building activities contribute to social-emotional learning and a positive middle school experience overall.
Because our current students have not only missed out on Eagle Bluff but are also dealing with the impacts of the pandemic, we are looking at options for next year that can include all RMS students, not just the sixth grade. Here are some of the logistics we are taking into consideration:
-
Space - We have already outgrown Eagle Bluff. Even if we just send our sixth grade students, they can only accommodate half of the students at a time, meaning two separate trips are needed. To send all RMS students would mean at least six separate trips.
-
Cost - Sending the sixth grade class costs approximately $72,000 each year. To cover this, extensive fundraising is required. Sending grades 6-8 would cost over $215,000. In addition to the financial cost, staff time and substitute teachers are covered by the District.
-
Inclusion - In recent years, only about 75% of sixth grade students attend the trip. Regardless of the reason, it means that a quarter of our students are missing out on this opportunity and the new friendships that come with it.
Some of the Eagle Bluff alternatives we are looking into include day trips to local organizations that provide similar programs for students, including Base Camp, YMCA Camp Ihduhapi and Wilderness Inquiry. By providing trips during the school day, we can significantly lower the cost and include students across all grade levels. We may even have the opportunity to provide these trips several times during the year, not just once.
We know that the Eagle Bluff trip is a long-standing tradition and that many alumni share fond memories of the trip. For most of us, it is the experience that is remembered—not the location. Whatever is decided, we will still provide students with a great team-building experience where they can get to know each other, learn new skills and have a great time.
We want to reassure you that no decisions have been made yet. These are just the conversations we are having. Family voice is also important and we will be sending out a survey this week for all 2022-23 RMS families where you can share your priorities when it comes to this trip and/or environmental and social-emotional learning options for our students.

Subject: Eagle Bluff Survey Results & Next Steps
Dear 2022-23 RMS Students and Families,
Thank you to all the families who completed the Eagle Bluff survey this weekend. We received approximately 150 completed surveys as of 8 a.m. Monday morning. As promised, here are the results of the survey. To view charts and additional responses, please view the survey results on our website.
As we plan for the 2022-23 school year, which student groups should be included in a team-building experience?
- All grades - 56.7%
- Sixth grade only - 20.6%
A larger, overnight experience is costly and requires a lot of staff and volunteer time. For this reason, it can only take place once during the year. Same-day experiences that happen locally or on-site are more cost-effective and could likely happen more than once during the year, reinforcing skills and deepening student relationships. Which would you prefer?
- One large overnight experience - 50.7%
- Multiple single-day experiences during the year - 49.3%
What are the most important things for RMS students to do or learn from this type of experience? (Results below are for those who selected “very important.” For full results, please visit our website.)
- Learn teamwork - 84.4%
- Challenge themselves - 77.6%
- Try something new - 77.6%
- Make new friends - 64.3%
- Spend the night away from home - 32.6%
In addition, we received 33 comments; 20 were in support of the Eagle Bluff trip and the remaining 13 were on a variety of topics related to involvement, fundraising, etc. In these comments, several people asked about the Eagle Bluff funds from the past two years and what happened to those. The answer is, there weren’t any. Eagle Bluff is primarily funded through fundraising and that fundraising did not take place because the trip did not take place. There is typically a small amount of distinct funding in regard to stipends for teacher planning, overnight supervision and substitute teachers. Those funds were used to cover other areas during the pandemic.
Next Steps
With this feedback, we will consult with both district leaders and our school leadership teams (the school teams consist of 15-20 RMS teachers and staff). We will use the information you provided us in the survey to inform our decisions when it comes to team-building events and activities for the 2022-23 school year. We anticipate meeting before spring break and we will let families know what decisions are made at that time.
Whatever the outcome, please know that every decision we make is focused on the best interest of our students. Our goal is to ensure all RMS students have an opportunity to learn new skills, challenge themselves, meet new friends and develop as a team.
Thank you for your support, your dedication to RMS and for always wanting what is best for your child and for all RMS students. Together, we will ensure the 2022-23 school year is the best year yet!

Subject: Eagle Bluff Update
Dear 2022-23 RMS Families,
We promised to provide you with an update on Eagle Bluff prior to spring break.
First, we want to again thank everyone who has provided feedback regarding the Eagle Bluff trip historically taken by incoming sixth grade students every year. Since our last email, we have continued to meet with school staff, including our building leadership teams and the sixth grade instructional team. We have agreed that we will provide all grade levels with team-building trips and opportunities during the year.
As for Eagle Bluff specifically, we have not yet made a final decision. If we have learned anything so far, it is that it is complicated. Not only are we trying to meet the needs of our students and families, but also to balance staff workload and parent involvement as it relates to planning, chaperoning and fundraising. Everyone on our team wants to make the best decision possible when it comes to supporting our students.
We anticipate making a decision one way or another by the end of April.
Thank you for your patience. We will communicate again once a decision has been made. As a reminder, you can view the Eagle Bluff survey results on our website.
Sincerely,
Principal Erica Barlow
